In single family districts, fences with a height up to 4 1/2 feet are permitted in street, side, and rear yards without a permit. A permit must be obtained for any fence taller than 4 1/2 feet to a maximum of 6 feet and must meet a setback from the street property line based on the zoning district where the fence is located. On a corner lot, fencing that might obstruct vision may not be located near the intersection.
The Zoning Ordinance regulates fencing and issues permits for their installation in the Village in residential and non-residential districts. Please feel free to contact the Zoning Department with any questions you may have regarding your project.
Additional regulations relative to the type of fences and locations permitted in your area may be made by your local neighborhood association, in restrictive covenants listed on your deed, or in easements on the property which prevent placement.
