- Fire Hydrant Flushing
Hydrant flushing is performed twice a year, in spring and fall. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the mains such as iron, a harmless reddish brown mineral that discolors the water. If you observe the water department personnel working in your area, refrain from using water or use as little as possible for ½ to ¾ of an hour to insure the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from being drawn into your water piping system.
If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining discolored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.
The utility operates and maintains hydrants on a regular schedule. When fire hydrants are flushed and checked for winter months, they are inspected for defects. By inspecting the hydrants, the Utility ensures that the hydrants are able to provide proper fire protection to our residents.
