The SSU has a variety of functions, all of which support department operations. These functions include, but are not limited to:
- Administering the Department's Police Aide Program
- Department property
- Department quartermaster
- Fleet maintenance
- Grant writing
- Liaison with the Waukesha County District Attorney's office
- Management of the municipal lock-up facility
- Municipal court liaison
- Recruitment of department members
- Technical services
- Training and development of department members
