Overdose Aid Kits Installed at Three Menomonee Falls Fire Department Stations
Over the last year, synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, were identified in 87% of opioid overdose deaths in Waukesha County as well as 73% of all drug overdose deaths in Wisconsin. The share increase in overdose deaths is not only impacting those who use opioids. Cocaine deaths involving synthetic opioids increased by 134% from 2019 to 2021 (182 to 426), and it is estimated that as many as 40% of counterfeit pills contain enough fentanyl to be lethal. In 2022, County Executive Paul Farrow declared a fentanyl community health crisis in Waukesha County.
The Menomonee Falls Fire Department MIH team is proud to partner with the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services to announce the installation of O.A.K. (Overdose Aid Kit) boxes at three of our fire stations across the Village of Menomonee Falls. Each box contains Naloxone nasal spray (brand name NARCAN®), CPR breathing masks, fentanyl test strips, and information on available local resources. These supplies are free to anyone and available to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the lobbies of our fire stations.
Naloxone (brand name NARCAN®) is a nasal spray used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It is safe for all, including children, pregnant women, and pets. Naloxone has no effect on someone who has not taken opioids, as well as no potential for abuse. It has minimal to no side effects and wears off in 30 to 90 minutes.
The O.A.K. (Overdose Aid Kit) boxes are located at:
- Menomonee Falls Fire Station 97 (formerly Station 5): N56 W19350 Silver Spring Dr, Menomonee Falls, WI 53051
