  4. Understanding the Opioid Epidemic: A Global to Local Perspective

    February 22, 2024, 6:00 PM - 7:15 PM
    @

    Community Room

Since 1999, the opioid epidemic has claimed the lives of more than one million Americans. This crisis traces its origins to the widespread over-prescription and easy accessibility of prescription opioids, with addicted individuals ultimately turning to illicit drugs like heroin and fentanyl. The far-reaching impact of the opioid epidemic knows no bounds, affecting communities across the globe to Menomonee Falls. Dr. Christine Boxhorn, a board-certified anesthesiologist and addictionologist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, will shed light on the historical and local evolution of this epidemic, explore potential opportunities for combating the crisis, and culminate with insights from her newly published book, “The Opioid Epidemic: Origins, Current State and Potential Solutions.”
