A 2017 Gallup Poll indicated that 57% of Americans have “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in law enforcement (Gallup Poll). That may not sound like resounding support and from the monitoring of the news and social media; one might believe it’s much less.
The tasks of a police department aren’t always popular with those affected. Aside from arrests and traffic citations, we are also the folks who shut down roadways when you’re late for work and call you in the middle of the night to have a garage door closed to prevent a theft. As a member of the Department, I know that these tasks are accomplished by well-intentioned officers after thorough consideration of the law, policy, best practices and common sense.
If such a poll was conducted in Menomonee Falls, antidotal evidence indicates the percentage of those supporting the PD would be much higher. By and large, our officers are reminded daily of the support they have from Village residents. A handshake, a word of thanks, snacks for the lunchroom and thank you notes from schools and scout troops are commonplace, and appreciated. Let us take this opportunity to thank you for the support you show, and assure you that your kindness only bolsters our resolve to keep the Village safe.
