[ARCHIVED] Streambank Stabilization Projects

The first streambank stabilization project is located in Rotary Park north and south of the pedestrian bridge on the Menomonee River granted by the Fund for Lake Michigan. The second project is located between Bobolink Ave. and Kaul Ave. on the Lilly Creek granted by SWWT, www.Swwtwater.org.

The first phase was completed in April with invasive plants removal and tree seedling plantings. The second phase is occurring in October with spraying of project area vegetation, the regrading of the slopes to reduce slump erosion and the final seeding and matting with native plants. The seeded areas will take several growing seasons for final stabilization due to their initial intensive growth of their root systems which stabilize the streambank slopes.

These two pilot projects, thanks to the award of the grants, will help improve the buffer area, reduce future erosion potential and improve water quality along the banks of the Menomonee River and Lilly Creek.
