[ARCHIVED] Online Sales of Property - Safety and Security

Image of a computer with the words, Big Sale, on its screen.

The vast majority of buyers and sellers engaged in online sales are lawful, well-intentioned people seeking to use the site as intended to sell goods that may be of more value to others than to them. But we should always be on our guard when meeting people for the exchange or negotiation of a sale. Here are a few safety and security tips offered by Craigslist when you are buying or a selling:

•Insist on a public meeting place like a cafe, bank, or shopping center.

•Do not meet in a secluded place, or invite strangers into your home.

•Be especially careful buying/selling high value items.

•Tell a friend or family member where you’re going.

•Take your cell phone along if you have one.

•Consider having a friend accompany you.

•Trust your instincts.

Also remember, the loss of any property is not worth risking your good health and well-being, be a good witness, call 911 (emergency, crime in-progress) and don’t try to physically stop or restrain the thief.

Stay safe.
