SAFEHOME, a home security company, recently published a list of Wisconsin’s safest cities with a population of at least 27,000. Menomonee Falls was ranked #2 with a Safety Score of 87.68. SAFEHOME’s Wisconsin’s Safest Cities website can be viewed at www.safehome.org/safest-cities/wi/. SAFEHOME uses criteria such as the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, crime trends, the number of law enforcement officers per capita, as well as population density, unemployment rates, median income and education level to arrive at its results. The full methodology can also be found at the website.
Despite the high ranking, the study indicates that violent crime rose by 149.6% from 2014 to 2015 (the year for which the study was conducted), but it’s important to point out that this rise represents an anomaly. Violent crime had dropped precipitously from 2013 to 2014, and in all cases, represents a small number of incidents. The department’s figures for 2016 and to date in 2017 indicate a downward trend.
The Menomonee Falls Police Department knows that any recognition of a safe community is earned through cooperation between its officers and the community, and will continue its efforts to make the village a safe place to live and work.
